Happy New Year and all that [Jan 2015]

Hello!

Looks like the second half of 2014 really got away from me; The last time I sent out this monthly email was in mid-September.

Back then I wrote about ‘chasing rabbits’ – about getting distracted from the things we want to be focussing on by all those things that pop up… yes, I realise there’s a heavy degree of irony to be found there…

Every month from October to December sending this email was on my to-do list. Every month I thought about what I would write. Every month I started writing it… ayear or two ago I might have next said ‘every month I failed to send it’, but these days I don’t really think like that.

I often use the analogy of juggling to describe my life, and in October to December I levelled up this handing skillset, even though I dropped a few balls along the way. Some things that went down that may (or may not) be of interest to you:

  • Published two poems, The Graduate and Hairy Legs, online via Seizure’s ‘Epistles at Dawn’ project.
  • Campaigned as a volunteer with Greens candidate for Newtown Jenny Leong, with my photography of the campaign being used in a variety of ways.
  • Worked with a bunch of fabulous people and organisations on a variety of projects, who were all kind enough to pay me, like Community Options Australia, the Greens NSW, Dr John Kaye MLC, the School Magazine, Sydney Pig Save, and Greg Chandler Signs.
  • Travelled to New Zealand for the first time (it won’t be the last) with a good friend and had a fabulous pre-end-of-year-holiday holiday. Photos here.

The new year has started quietly, but with intention. I’m officially back on deck from today and am hoping to drop less balls that get thrown at me this year.

Over the next 4-6 weeks I’ll be replicating the 2014 Summer of Live Music, this yearin Parramatta, the Domain and Echuca, as well as starting a couple of writing workshops which will help give shape to my book.

Hope you’ve had a lovely break if you had one, and that you’ve been well regardless.

Mark

PS: Here’s a picture of how ridiculously amazing New Zealand landscapes are:
